Our precious Bodie |
On
the morning that Amanda was born, her mother was wheeled into the
delivery room lying on a table. Mom's belly was painted all brown. A
nurse said that Dad would be in as soon as they put the curtains up.
Another nurse said to the first nurse, “Never say 'Curtains!' to a
woman about to have surgery!”
Dad
came in. He was dressed from head to toe with blue surgical clothing.
His mouth was covered with a mask. But his eyes were smiling.

After
a few minutes, one of the doctors held up a newborn bundle – high
above the curtain, and he said, “What have we here?”
Dad
said, “It's a girl!.....And she's got hair – lots of long black
hair!”
With
that, the baby breathed her first breath and began her first cry.
The
doctors and the nurses asked, “What is the baby's name?”
Mom
and Dad said in unison, “Amanda Louise.”
One
of the nurses took the camera out of Dad's arms and started taking
pictures.

Another
nurse put the baby into Dad's arms. And he brought her over closer to
Mom. Closer. And – oh!
Amanda
got her first kiss!
The
nurse said that the baby would have to go to the nursery and get a
check-up, but Dad could go with her and keep holding her.
In
the nursery, Amanda was proclaimed A O-K, 100 percent perfect.
She
was still crying.
Dad
looked around and saw what he was looking for.
And
so it was on Thursday December the 4th, 1986, around 8:30 in the
morning, in the State of Oklahoma, the City of Bartlesville, the
hospital called Jane Phillips Memorial, in the far and darkened
corner of the newborn nursery, Dad sat in the rocking chair. And he
looked at his minutes old daughter. And she looked at him.
Then
Amanda closed her eyes and took her first nap.
