The
first day of the month of June quote from my Dad is “Just remember,
after I die, you still have 29 years to catch up to me!”
Dad was 29
when my brother Eric was born – which meant Dad always had 29 years
more of experiences, wisdom gained, street smarts acquired than Eric
had – and it would not be until Dad died that Eric could
possibly hope to catch up to the man his father was. Dad mostly said
this to Eric, so that is why the 29 years is the most memorable of
the quotes. In Clark's case it would be 27 years, and in mine 24
years. Dad was 24 when I was born.
My Dad passed away in 1990 – a month shy of his 61st
birthday.
And last year, I turned 61 – I have made it to the 24
years he had said it would take to catch up to him.
But
have I really caught up?
Oh heavens no! Dad's shadow is still so much
bigger than the person I could ever hope to be.
