When the girls were young,
Sarah had acquired an owl collection – which, after it had grown so
big, we would put on display in all its glory every July, the month
of her birthday. Amanda had two collections – Grandma Mary would
get her an angel for each birthday – she now has one through
eighteen – and Amanda also had a panda bear collection – Panda
was one of her nicknames for a while – and we would put both of
these collections on display each December, the month of Amanda's
birthday – setting everything out at once took some bit of
creativity since December is when the Christmas decorations also came
out.

And
so after establishing this new tradition and practicing it for a few
years, it followed naturally that every September would be the month
that the clowns came out – the month of my birthday.
If
truth be told, I never asked for nor wanted a clown collection –
and over the years I have found good homes for all of them and given
them all away. Except......well there are some I am attached to after
all. And they emerge from the china cabinet every September, and
they are proudly shown off, and they bring back the memories of why
they are the clowns that are so special to me. They inspire the clown that
is in me and prompt more stories.
So
it is seven days into September already, well past time to put the clowns back out – let the
light shine on and through them!

And for those of you who do not like
clowns or think that clowns hide evil or you are just plain scared of
clowns – remember this, one of the five mottoes that I live by and
the only one I have come up with all on my own, inside every
clown is a real human being, and clowns are people too!
