George H. W. Bush 41st President |
Amanda
was in kindergarten in 1992 – a presidential election year. The
first George Bush was President and running for re-election against
Bill Clinton. On the wall in Mrs. Gilchrist's kindergarten room was
this picture of George Bush. One day I asked Mrs. Gilchrist who was
going to get the poster when Bush loses the election?
“Am
I the only one around here who is voting for George Bush?” she
responded woefully.
Big sister Sarah answered, "Spotted owls!" Enough said.
I
asked if Amanda could have the poster when the new one of Bill
Clinton goes up, and Mrs. Gilchrist said yes.
The
girls have had lots of fun with this poster over the years. I think
it was in one of the bedrooms for a while and was used for sport
during sleepovers – games similar to “pin the tail”, etc. For a
while it had a red slash through it similar to the “no” symbol –
so it meant “no George Bush” the same way a car would have a
sticker with a red slash across a picture of a lemon and it meant “no
lemon”.
After
a few years, the George Bush poster, with all the extraneous marking
wiped off, was hung in the garage. One time, and we are talking
around 1998 by now, my hot water heater rusted out, and Handyman
Paul, from the lab, came by to install a new hot water heater for me.
Well, when Paul saw the picture of George in the garage, his face
just lit right up, “You like George Bush?” he said. I was afraid
to respond – after all, I needed the hot water – but if Handyman
Paul knew all the things that had been done to that poster over the
years......
George
is still there on the garage wall today – two hot water heaters
later. He smiles at me as I park the Jeep, and I smile back at him,
remembering Amanda in kindergarten, and giggling sleepovers, and
Handyman Paul worrying about my choices in political leaders. The
poster has served us well!
