Heart in Hand

And moving from one Prez Bush to the next, you know, people tell me to get over the whole 2000 election theft but I am still bitter and besides, these are the same people who go on a rant any time the Clintons are mentioned. So anyway, in 2003 it was apparent that George W was going to take troops into Iraq to force a regime change and make the US safe from alleged weapons of destruction.
I was not happy. War might be good for W's business buddies, but it is not good for anything else. Prospects of war only make those of us who lived during the Viet Nam era proclaim that a new war could lead to a new Viet Nam, meaning it could go on and on with no end and no glory.
But W was not listening to me. The troops went into Iraq.
Someone at the lab gave me the copy of Creative Loafing – the cover read War Gives New Purpose to Old Hippies. I put the cover on the back of my office door where it remained until this week when I took it home and framed it. Old Hippies do not need new purpose – we would be oh so happy without purpose, without war! Why not give us a chance to prove it!

That first day of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I made cookies to take in to the lab – I had gotten two cookie cutters – one in the shape of a hand, and a much smaller one in the shape of a heart. A heart cookie, colored red, went inside the hand cookie. A wish for peace presented to my co-workers.
Later in the day, the plate had just a few cookies left. And they had all their fingers broken off except the middle one.
Someone was being funny, and yes I could laugh along with the gesture.
But sigh, can't we even get peace in the microcosm?
As for the War, regime changed.
We became safe from alleged weapons of mass destruction. Because there weren't any.
It has been reported that W's business buddies did well.
The war went on and on.
There has been little glory except for the lights that shine in all who are helping and hoping to eventually do right by the veterans who came home alive.
Recently my grand-daughter spied the cookie cutouts of the hand and the heart – we baked a fresh batch.
