Yesterday and Today

This was written on the occasion of Amanda's graduation from college in May of 2009.

Sarah, Amanda 1988 Texas
Yesterday Amanda, who was not quite two, was watching her sister put together a 24-piece jigsaw puzzle on the living room rug. Sarah, who has just turned four, was in her usual position of intense concentration as she studied the pieces. We were in the rented house in Texas. I was in the kitchen which joined the living room, and I could see the girls clearly while loading the dishwasher. Amanda could tell her sister was very serious with her puzzle; Sarah had lost notice of everything else around.
Amanda bent over, picked up a puzzle piece, stood up, stifled a laugh, and ran to the bedroom. She returned empty-handed and walked over to Sarah who was unaware of the theft.
Amanda picked up another puzzle piece and ran to the bedroom. I stopped what I was doing so I could watch. Amanda returned to the living room empty-handed.
Sarah stared at the puzzle piece in her hand and tried to fit it to the puzzle in front of her in several places. Amanda bent down to pick up another piece. I intervened, “Amanda! Knock it off!”
The giggles she had been suppressing came out now in a gleeful, mischievous, lusty laugh. I wondered if this was a sign of things to come?
          “Huh?” Sarah said, looking around.

Amanda ran to the bedroom and returned with the missing puzzle pieces and gave them to Sarah who then said, “Hey!”
Today Amanda, who is more than twenty-two, walked into Sanford Stadium at UGA, in Athens,Georgia. She was in cap and gown, and the cap had a pink tassel for Bodie's music major.
Today, while I watched from the sidelines, I had no worries about this mischievous little daughter with the lusty laugh – she has turned out to be the puzzle that is perfectly put together – talent, beauty, maturity, love, and so much more for the whole world to look forward to.
Sarah came home from England just to surprise her sister for graduation. Sarah stood nearby and others told Amanda to look.
“Huh?” she said, and then she looked and saw Sarah and said, “Hey!”

          I have been so blessed!
